Harley Davidson: Live to Ride

Riding to Mt. Rushmore, one of the events for Sturgis, South Dakota

Stan, Me, Greg and Sandy

These are my Oregon Buddies, we meet occasionally up at different locations. We originally met at the famous Hollister Independence Rally, home of the filming of THE WILD ONE with Marlon Brando. Now they all have Harley Road Kings, a great cruising bike.

Me & "Broken Wing"

Here I am with my wife, "Broken Wing," in at Mt. Rushmore 2001. Broken Wing got to enjoy Sturgis 2001, including the tornado that decided to bypass downtown Sturgis at the last minute.

Crazy Horse is an incredible sight to see. They recently built a very nice visitor center.

My 1999 Road King Classic

I have almost 50,000 miles on my Road King. This picture was taken in Milwaukee, Wisconsin during the Harley 100 Anniversary. Along with my wife, Broken-Wing we made the 5,000 mile round-trip from Southern California to Milwaukee.

King is equipped with a 6 speed transmission which helped get 45 miles per gallon on the trip. Gasoline consumption 111 gallons @ $1.85 avg. cost per gallon = $205.00 for the 5,000 mile trip. King required one oil change @ $35.00 at the Wisconsin Harley Dealer.

King has many aftermarket parts added to enhance the look of the bike, from 14" chubby ape hangers to chrome forks. The chrome eyebrows on the headlights and the fishtail pipes are to give it the nostalgic look of the old Harley Duo-Glide Model. Notice the Kuryakin highway foot pegs for the rider and the passenger. This provides the rider and the passenger two locations for their feet on a long trip. These dual foot rests allow you still have plenty of energy, once you reach your destination. I went to blackwall tires, as keeping the whitewalls clean was a near impossible task and I like the black walls better personally.

Whatever Harley you have or purchase, enjoy it for yourself. No matter what people will say....... "if this were my bike, I would do this or that to it !!!

Most Harley owners that I know end up getting a Road King (or a Classic) for long trips, and keep their other Harley for around town or going to local biker events). Passenger comfort is at an all time high on the Road King. My personal favorite Harley to ride around town, is my Iron-head Sporty Chopper with a rigid frame, but it doesn't cut it on a long trip. The big advantage of the Road King is the ride and how it handles in heavy winds due to its weight of about 750 pounds. The Road King has great storage capacity with its saddlebags and simply add a T-Bag on the sissy-bar for your clothes on a long trip. Everyone has a different opinion... this one is mine!!!

Keep the shinny side up and the rubber on the road !!!!
